The essence of being digital is the ability to break down information into a format that can be processed quickly and stored efficiently. It’s why you can instantly access information, communicate, and entertain yourself in ways that were impossible before computers and the internet. At least, that’s what ChatGPT thinks.

In class, we learned that digital can also apply to things other than computers, such as a human’s genome which is essentially digital. A common misconception people have is that the term “digital” only refers to computers and technology and that the core of it is binary code. This is very false.

There is a key difference between digital information and analog information. These two categories can be used to classify things other than just technology. Something that is digital is discrete, with a finite number of things it can be. For example, since the alphabet has 26 upper & lowercase letters, the letters would be considered digital. However, if it was analog, there would need to be an infinite number of letters and possibilities. Like how a painting from centuries ago could have had infinite possibilities for what it originally looked like back in the day.

We learned in class that even if a word is written in a weird medieval font, our brain can still read it since it recognizes the pattern of letters and the limited possibilities for each letter since it is digital. The Digital Revolution is ongoing and technological advancements have helped to separate the signal from the noise over the years. However, one of the newest ideas is to start embracing the noise. Will this radically redefine the Digital Revolution as we know it?
